United carry-on size: 22 x 14 x 9 in, unless you booked Basic Economy
United's carry-on limit is 22 x 14 x 9 inches, and United tells you to measure with the handle and wheels included. Same box as American and Delta, no weight limit. But on United the size chart is the easy half of the question; the fare you booked decides whether you may bring the bag at all. Verified against united.com on 2026-07-09.
The Basic Economy catch: no carry-on on most domestic routes
United's own wording is blunt: in Basic Economy you can bring only one personal item on most flights, and carry-on bags are prohibited except on routes to South America and across the Atlantic or Pacific. Board a domestic Basic Economy fare with a roller bag and it gets checked, not binned. The exceptions that keep the full carry-on even on Basic Economy: those long-haul routes, MileagePlus Premier members, and holders of qualifying United credit cards.
This is the opposite of American's Basic Economy and Southwest's Basic fare, both of which include a full carry-on on every ticket. If you are comparing cheap fares with a roller bag in hand, United's sticker price is not the real price of traveling with that bag.
The number that actually bites: 17 x 10 x 9 under the seat
Because Basic Economy travelers live out of the personal item, United's under-seat box matters more here than at any other big carrier, and it is the strictest of the big three. The pinch point is width: 10 inches, where American allows 14. On paper only 4 of the 35 personal items in our luggage database fit it. Soft totes squish, hard-sided under-seaters do not, so treat the published number as the rule for anything with structure.
