American Airlines carry-on size: 22 x 14 x 9 inches
American Airlines allows one carry-on up to 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 36 x 23 cm), wheels and handles included, plus one personal item up to 18 x 14 x 8 inches that goes under the seat. Both are free on every fare, including Basic Economy. There is no published weight limit for either.
That is the whole rule, verified against American's own baggage page on 2026-07-08. AA's exact wording: the total size of your carry-on, including the handles and wheels, cannot exceed 22 x 14 x 9 inches and must fit in the sizer at the airport. The rest of this page is what the rule means for real luggage, because most bags sold as carry-ons do not actually pass it.
Most “carry-ons” are too big for American
We keep manufacturer-verified exterior dimensions for 105suitcases and travel packs sold as carry-ons. Run them all against American's box and the result is lopsided: only 21 clear it, and 84 are over on at least one side. The luggage industry mostly builds to the roomier bins at Southwest and Frontier (24 x 16 x 10), then labels the result a carry-on. On American, that label is marketing.
It gets tighter. Of the 21 that do fit, 19 measure within three quarters of an inch of the limit on their worst side, most of them at exactly 22 x 14 x 9. An exact match passes the sizer, but it leaves zero margin for a bulging front pocket or a soft shell packed hard. Only 2bags in our whole catalogue clear AA's box with real room to spare.

The personal item: 18 x 14 x 8 in
American is one of the few US carriers that publishes exact personal-item dimensions at all (Southwest and Delta do not). 18 x 14 x 8 inches is also unusually generous: 14 of the 35personal items we track fit it, where United's smaller under-seat box admits only a handful. A tote or small duffel like the Calpak Luka Duffel rides under an AA seat with room left over.
Basic Economy keeps the carry-on
American's cheapest fare still includes the full carry-on and the personal item. The one practical catch is boarding order: Basic Economy boards last, and AA itself warns that bins are often full by then, so a late group can mean a free gate check even with a legal bag. Policy-wise, though, AA's cheapest fare is materially better for bin space than United's Basic Economy, which limits you to a personal item on most domestic routes. If you fly basic fares with a full-size carry-on, that difference alone can decide the booking.
If it has to be checked instead
Standard checked bags on American are up to 50 lb and 62 linear inches (length plus width plus height). Checked-bag fees apply on standard domestic fares and are cheaper prepaid on aa.com than paid at the airport; elite members, most AA cardholders and premium cabins get the first bag free. Overweight and oversize surcharges stack in tiers above 50 lb and 62 inches, so a bag that is both big and heavy gets expensive fast.
