Etihad Baggage Allowance: Cabin, Checked, and Basic Fare

Economy passengers get one cabin bag weighing no more than 7 kg (15.4 lb) and measuring no more than 56 x 36 x 23 cm (about 22 x 14.2 x 9.1 in). Business, First, and The Residence passengers get two cabin bags with a combined weight of up to 12 kg, or one bag up to 12 kg on flights to or from the U.S.

On top of the main cabin bag, every passenger can also bring one additional smaller item weighing up to 5 kg and measuring up to 23 x 39 x 19 cm. That's Etihad's equivalent of a personal item, and unlike some airlines, it comes with its own explicit weight and size limit rather than a vague 'fits under the seat' description, which makes it easier to pack toward a known number instead of guessing.

On most international routes outside the U.S. and Canada, Etihad allows Economy passengers to check as many bags as they want as long as the total weight stays within their fare's overall allowance, a weight-based system rather than a fixed piece count. Regardless of that total, no single checked bag can weigh more than 32 kg (70.5 lb).

For flights to or from the U.S. or Canada, Etihad switches to a fixed piece system instead: Economy passengers, excluding the Basic fare, get 2 checked bags up to 23 kg (50 lb) each, while Business, First, and The Residence passengers get 2 checked bags up to 32 kg (70 lb) each.

This is the detail worth knowing before you book Etihad's cheapest fare: the Basic fare does not include any checked baggage allowance at all. Every checked bag on a Basic fare is an add-on you pay for separately, on top of the base ticket price. If you're comparing a Basic fare against a Saver or Flex fare and know you'll need to check a bag, the checked bag add-on cost needs to go into that comparison, not just the sticker price of the ticket.

Etihad doesn't publish one flat number for buying extra baggage, but it does state that booking additional checked baggage through Manage Your Booking can save up to 65 percent compared to paying for it at the airport. The booking window differs by system: up to 30 hours before departure for piece-based bookings, and up to 4 hours before your flight for weight-based bookings. Either way, adding bags online as soon as you know you'll need them beats waiting until check-in.

Etihad Guest members flying on a Deal Fare get an extra free checked baggage allowance based on tier: Silver members get an additional 10 kg, Gold members get an additional 15 kg, and Platinum members get an additional 20 kg, on top of the fare's base allowance. For Gold and Platinum members, this bonus already shows up automatically in the baggage calculator's total rather than needing to be added separately.

Gold, Platinum, and Emerald Etihad Guest members also get free priority check-in, boarding, and baggage handling, which doesn't change your weight or piece allowance but can matter for how quickly your bag comes out on the belt after landing.

Between the main 7 kg cabin bag and the additional 5 kg small item, Economy passengers effectively have 12 kg of cabin allowance split across two pieces, as long as neither piece individually exceeds its own limit. That's a meaningfully different packing strategy than a single combined allowance: you can't put 9 kg in the main bag and 3 kg in the small item just because the total is 12 kg, since each piece is weighed separately against its own cap.

The practical approach is to put your heaviest items, shoes, toiletries, chargers, into the 7 kg main bag first, since it has more usable volume for the same weight budget, and reserve the 5 kg small item for genuinely light things like documents, a light jacket, or a slim laptop. Trying to force weight into the smaller item because the main bag looks full is the most common way travelers end up over on one piece while under on the other.

If your itinerary combines an Etihad-operated segment with a codeshare or interline partner, the baggage allowance that actually applies can shift mid-trip, governed by whichever carrier operates that specific leg rather than staying fixed to Etihad's own rules for the whole journey. This is common on itineraries connecting through Abu Dhabi onward to a partner airline's network.
