Emirates Weight Allowance: Cabin, Checked, and Route Rules

Economy Class gets one cabin bag up to 7 kg (15.4 lb), sized at 55 x 38 x 22 cm (21.65 x 14.96 x 8.66 in), including handles and wheels. Premium Economy gets the same dimensions with a slightly higher 10 kg (22 lb) allowance. This is a flat rule across every Economy fare type, Special, Saver, Flex, and Flex Plus. Emirates doesn't restrict cabin baggage by fare tier the way some airlines restrict carry-ons on their cheapest tickets.

Business and First Class get two cabin pieces totaling 14 kg (30.8 lb): one 7 kg carry-on at the same 55 x 38 x 22 cm size, plus a second 7 kg briefcase or garment bag. There's a notable gap here: Emirates' cabin baggage page doesn't mention a separate free personal item for Economy or Premium Economy passengers at all. The 7 kg or 10 kg cabin allowance is your one and only cabin piece in those cabins, not a carry-on plus a separate under-seat bag.

Departures from Brazil carry a different cabin weight limit of 10 kg across all classes, higher than the standard 7 kg Economy figure. Flights boarding in India are limited to a single cabin piece with a maximum of 115 cm (45.3 in) total length plus width plus height, a size-based rule layered on top of the standard weight limit. If your itinerary touches either of these markets, check the route-specific rule rather than assuming the global 7 kg figure applies unchanged, since boarding a flight with the wrong assumption can mean a repack at the gate.

This is the part of Emirates' policy most worth understanding before you book. On most routes outside the Americas and Africa, Emirates uses a weight concept: you can check as many bags as you want, as long as your total weight stays within your fare and cabin's overall allowance and no single bag exceeds 32 kg (70.5 lb).

On flights to and from the Americas and Africa, Emirates switches to a piece concept instead. Economy Special fares get one free checked bag up to 23 kg (50 lb). Economy Saver, Flex, and Flex Plus fares get two free checked bags up to 23 kg each, 46 kg total. Either way, every checked bag on every route is capped at 32 kg (70.5 lb) individually, and the total size of each bag can't exceed 150 cm (59 in), length plus width plus height.

Emirates doesn't publish a flat dollar rate for extra or excess baggage. Instead, additional allowance is sold in 5 kg increments up to a maximum of 50 kg through the Manage Your Booking tool, priced per route, and the airline states you can save 50 to 60 percent by buying it online in advance rather than paying at the airport. That's a meaningful discount, and it's also the reason no single number can be quoted here as your excess baggage fee: it genuinely depends on your specific flight.

If you know before you travel that you'll be over your included allowance, price and buy the extra weight through Manage Your Booking rather than waiting for the airport counter, both for the discount and because it locks in the price instead of leaving it to whatever the day-of airport rate happens to be. This is worth doing even if you're only slightly over, since the gap between the online rate and the airport rate is large enough on most routes to be worth the five minutes it takes.

Emirates Skywards Platinum and Gold members get an additional piece on top of their ticketed allowance on piece-concept routes: an extra 23 kg for Economy or Premium Economy members, or an extra 32 kg for Business or First Class members. That's on top of, not instead of, the standard fare-based allowance, so a Gold member on an Economy Saver fare flying to the Americas would get three checked bags rather than two.

A 7 kg cabin allowance is noticeably tighter than the roughly 15 to 35 pound (7 to 16 kg) carry-on weight limits, or complete lack of one, on U.S. carriers like American, Delta, and United. Since Emirates doesn't hand Economy passengers a second free personal item to spread weight into, everything you're bringing into the cabin, including a laptop, charger, and any duty-free purchases before boarding, needs to fit inside that single 7 kg piece.

The bag itself counts toward the weight, so a heavier empty suitcase eats into your allowance before you've packed anything. A soft-sided cabin bag under 2 kg empty leaves noticeably more of the 7 kg limit for actual belongings than a heavier hardside case does, which matters more on Emirates' Economy cabin rule than it does on airlines with a higher or unweighed carry-on limit.
