Aer Lingus Carry-On Size and Baggage Fees

Aer Lingus's cabin bag limit is 55 cm in height, 40 cm in width, and 24 cm in depth (about 21.5 x 15.5 x 9.5 inches), capped at 10 kg (22 lb). That weight cap is the detail worth remembering, since most U.S. carriers only enforce carry-on size, not weight, and a bag that's well within the size limit can still get flagged if it's packed heavy.

This is the same limit whether you're flying Aer Lingus's mainline routes or, as of March 3, 2026, Aer Lingus Regional flights operated by Emerald Airlines, which previously ran a smaller allowance on some routes.

Practically, that 10 kg cap means a case built to the maximum 55 x 40 x 24 cm dimensions still needs to be packed light to clear Aer Lingus specifically, even if the same case would sail through a weight-unlimited carrier like American or United without a second thought. Weigh it before you leave home, not at the gate.

Plus and Advantage fares include the 10 kg cabin bag free, no matter the destination. AerClub Silver, Platinum, and Concierge members get it free as well, regardless of which fare they've booked.

Saver fare is the exception. It doesn't include the cabin bag automatically. According to Aer Lingus's own policy update, Saver fare passengers can either pay to bring a bag on board, or check a bag into the hold for free instead, an option worth knowing about if you'd rather skip the cabin bag fee entirely and just check a bag.

The Plus, Advantage, and AerClub-status inclusion means Aer Lingus's baggage-free tier sits above its cheapest fare but below its most expensive one, a middle-ground structure rather than the all-fares-included approach carriers like American and JetBlue use for their carry-on.

On top of the cabin bag, Aer Lingus allows one small personal item, a handbag or laptop bag, free on every fare including Saver. Aer Lingus's own page lists the maximum size as 40 cm in height, 30 cm in width, and 20 cm in depth (about 15.5 x 11.5 x 8 inches).

That's a genuinely small allowance by industry standards, smaller than American's or United's published personal item limits, so a bag that clears as a personal item on a U.S. carrier isn't guaranteed to clear on Aer Lingus.

The check-it-free option on Saver fares is a genuinely useful workaround if you're traveling with more than a personal item but don't want to pay for cabin space: rather than buying the 10 kg cabin bag allowance, you can send a bag to the hold at no extra charge, provided it fits Aer Lingus's standard checked baggage weight and size rules.

Before March 3, 2026, Aer Lingus Regional flights, operated by Emerald Airlines on smaller aircraft, ran a different, smaller cabin bag allowance than Aer Lingus's mainline routes. That gap is gone now. Aer Lingus extended the same 55 x 40 x 24 cm, 10 kg policy across all Aer Lingus Regional flights, covering domestic Ireland and UK routes, Ireland-UK routes, and European flights.

If you're connecting through a regional leg onto a longer Aer Lingus flight, this means you no longer need to plan around two different cabin bag limits for the same trip, a real simplification for anyone routing through Dublin or Belfast on a smaller aircraft.

For travelers connecting through a regional leg, for example a UK regional airport into Dublin before a transatlantic flight, this update removes what used to be a real planning headache: packing to the smaller regional limit for one leg and the larger mainline limit for the other. Now it's one number for the whole itinerary.

British Airways' cabin bag runs larger at 56 x 45 x 25 cm and publishes no weight limit at all, relying instead on a lift-it-yourself test. Air France caps its cabin bag at a similar 55 x 35 x 25 cm, but instead of weighing the cabin bag alone, it caps the cabin bag and personal item together at 12 kg in Economy.

Aer Lingus sits in between: a defined weight cap like Air France's approach, but applied to the cabin bag specifically rather than combined with the personal item. If you're flying a mixed itinerary across these carriers, don't assume one airline's cabin bag weight rule carries over to the next leg.

None of these three carriers, Aer Lingus, British Airways, or Air France, publishes numbers that are interchangeable with each other, despite flying similar transatlantic routes. If you're booking a codeshare or a connecting itinerary that crosses carriers, check each leg's specific cabin bag rule rather than assuming continuity.

It's also worth knowing that Aer Lingus and British Airways are both part of the International Airlines Group, IAG, alongside Iberia and others. That shared ownership hasn't produced matching baggage policy, IAG's member airlines set cabin baggage rules independently rather than following one group-wide standard, which is exactly why their numbers still diverge as much as they do.
